General Road Rules
Drive on the left
Stay in the left lane unless you're overtaking. The single biggest adjustment for visitors used to right-hand driving.
Speed limits
- Residential areas
- 25 mph (40 km/h)
- School zones
- 15 mph (24 km/h), in school hours
- Main roads
- 40 to 50 mph (64 to 80 km/h)
Seat belts
Everyone buckles up, back seat included. It's the driver's responsibility to make sure of it.
Roundabouts
Yield to traffic from your right, pick your lane by your exit, and always signal out. Full guide below.
Four-way stop
First to arrive goes first. Arrive together? The car on the left yields to the one on the right.
Overtaking
Only on broken white lines, and only when the road ahead is clearly empty. Watch for cyclists.
No handheld phones
Handheld calls while driving are prohibited. Use hands-free, or pull over safely first.
Headlights
On in heavy rain, fog, or after dark, for your visibility and to be seen by others.
Drink-driving
The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.07%. Random breath tests are routine and penalties are severe: fines, jail, and licence suspension.
Also worth knowing
- Give motorcyclists and cyclists plenty of room.
- Yield to emergency vehicles and to pedestrians at crosswalks.
- Signal every turn at intersections.

Navigating Roundabouts

Entering the Roundabout
Always yield to traffic already on the roundabout, coming from your right. Wait for a safe gap before you enter.

Choosing the Correct Lane
- Left turn (first exit): use the left lane.
- Straight ahead (second exit): either lane, but stay in it throughout.
- Right turn (third exit) or U-turn: use the right lane.

Signalling
- Signal left for the first exit.
- Going straight? No signal in, then signal left after the first exit.
- Third exit or U-turn: signal right, then left after the second exit.

Inside the Roundabout
Hold your lane and never switch lanes inside. Use your indicators to show when you're about to exit.

Exiting the Roundabout
Signal is on as you prepare to leave. Check mirrors and blind spots for cyclists, motorbikes, and other vehicles on your way out.
